Description
Summary:This study dealt with economics of rice production in Ogun State, southwestern Nigeria and the role of agricultural extension services in improving the yield of rice farmers and maximising their profit level. Using a multistage random sampling, 162 farmers were selected from three rice producing local government areas of the state. Net farm income estimation, regression analysis and resource -use efficiency determination were used to analyse the data. The mean yield of rice in the area is 1.37 tons /ha. The contribution of rice to total returns among crop mixtures is highest in rice/ melon. Factors that significantly contribute to rice output are fertilizer, planting materials, family labour, hired labour and land. Extension services accounts for only 10.03% variation in rice output and only extension agents' visit is significant. The net farm income is Pó22,611.25 ($170.65) per hectare, indicating that the production system is profitable although low.
