description A descriptive cross-sectional, descriptive, observational study was conducted at "Arnaldo Milián Castro" University Hospital of the province of Villa Clara, in the period between February 2012 and January 2015 in order to analyze the usefulness of ultrasonography in diseases of the painful shoulder. We worked with the whole universe, which were 56 patients who had confirmed the ultrasonographic diagnosis of shoulder condition. According to the assessment made the highest percentage of patients was found in the group of 51-60 years of age, with a predominance of females and physical activity of moderate to severe. The rotator cuff tendinitis supraspinatus with involvement was the most common disease, with own sonographic patterns that condition as decreased echogenicity of the tendon and increasing its thickness, while the color Doppler technique offered a complementary information obtained by ultrasonography in gray scale on inflammatory processes of the tendon of the long head of the biceps. There was a positive and direct linear correlation between clinical diagnosis and ultrasound of the cuff rupture and tendinitis of long head of the biceps; on the other shoulder conditions there was no relationship between clinical diagnosis and ultrasound.
