description Within the debate about the so-called “historicism” which occurred in the realm of German scholarship between the Wars, Werner Jaeger, a philologist and a leading figure of what has been called the “Third Humanism”, wanted to rebuild the bridges between “science” and “life” which were broken according to him. In the wake of the German tradition of return to the Greeks inherited from the 19th century, the movement he promoted intended to revive the link with the Greek “source” in order to set up a new humanism. At odds with the aesthetic classicism of the neo-humanistic generation, he invited the community of German scholarship to enhance the political dimension of the Hellenic legacy. Thus, Werner Jaeger’s “Third Humanism” was elaborated between “science” and “life”, between the process of construction of knowledge about Ancient Greece and the participation in the contemporary debates. Written in the perspective of a history of reception of Antiquity in modern ages, the present paper aims at studying Jaeger’s humanistic discourse in the light of the switching back and forth it establishes between contemporary Germany and the Greek past, so as to reassess his significance.
