Summary: | At a time when artworks by African photographers arouse a growing interest within North-based institutions and while a number of initiatives to promote them are taking place in Africa as well, historical photographic archives meet today a more uncertain future over the continent. Nevertheless, different and growing groups of people get into action trying to preserve what they consider endangered heritages, whose attentive study will enrich the history of the countries from which they arise, not to mention that of photography. This article draws then on who they are, what are their projects and means and finally the contexts from which they operate.
