Description
Summary:Given the scarcity of water as a limiting factor to development and the direct and indirect incorporation of water in the production processes, this study aims to understand the virtual water trade between Paraná and the main regions with which it trades: São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul and Rest of Brazil, as well as investigating whether Paraná behaves as a net regional importer or exporter in this segment. The study of virtual water flows in Paraná is relevant, since Paraná stands out as one of the largest agricultural producers in the country and the largest consumer of water in Brazil is the agricultural sector. For this purpose, the concept of virtual water and an interregional input-output model with six sectors were used. The results show that in the agricultural sector, as well as in trade with São Paulo, Paraná is a net exporter of virtual water. However, in the Transformation and Construction Industry sector, as well as in trade with the Rest of Brazil, the state behaves as a net importer. However, exports have greater weight, making the state a net exporter of virtual water, when considering all sectors and regions of Brazil.
