Description
Summary:The „Sonata Reminiscenza” by N. Medtner (1918-1919) opens the trilogy „Forgotten Melodies” Op. 38-40. The unusual aspects of his composition are justified by its own program: the author’s desire to give similarity to the process of reminiscences through the organization of the musical time. The Sonata has one movement, which includes a double exposition, development and re-entry with a new episode, which brings light tones in the sonata’s general melancholy context. The pulsation of the sixteenths provides smoothness and ease of switching from one thematic image to another. The introduction theme has likeness with meditation, the main theme includes two elements, the secondary theme sounds like a song. The development focuses on the main theme, the re-entry returns to the imaginative area of the exposition. The Sonata ends with a repetition of the introduction theme, which gives the sense of wholeness, linking everything together like an arch.
