Description
Summary:Taking place during the months of January and February 1926, the transatlantic flight of the seaplane Plus Ultra, piloted by Ramón Franco, brother of the dictator-to-be, achieved an extraordinary degree of resonance both in Spain and throughout Latin America. The considerable enthusiasm that this crossing aroused among the public undoubtedly came in response to the sporting prowess shown. Nonetheless, in Spain it came to be celebrated as a veritable «oceanic Odyssey», exalting national values and linking up with Spain’s past glories. Carried by the press, radio, public demonstrations and speeches, an absolute legend grew up around the exploit and its protagonists. In this article we examine the mythification of the event and the gaps separating popular legend, official propaganda and the revivification pursued by certain parties for personal ends. Through these differences of interpretation, manifested in the various readings of the event left to us by Primo de Rivera, king Alfonso XIII and the protagonists of the flight themselves, one can descry the fault lines traversing Spain under the dictatorship.
