Studying protective effects of oats and barley extract on some blood parameters (HDL, cholesterol and triglycerides) in rats fed high-fat diet

Abstract: Introduction: The role of plants in reducing blood fats and thus reduction the risk of heart-coronary disease is known. The main aim of this study is effect of oats and barley extract on blood factors and atherosclerosis in adult rats. Methods: In this study, 50 female Wistar rats weighing...

description Abstract: Introduction: The role of plants in reducing blood fats and thus reduction the risk of heart-coronary disease is known. The main aim of this study is effect of oats and barley extract on blood factors and atherosclerosis in adult rats. Methods: In this study, 50 female Wistar rats weighing approximately 300±20 gram were purchased from Animal House of Jahrom. Then, they are divided into 5 groups with 10 rats including control group (without any receiving any sustenance), instance group (1% weight of food is cholesterol), Experimental 1 group (daily 1% weight of food is cholesterol and also barley extract with BW dosage, 125mg/kg), Experimental 2 group (daily 1% weight of food is cholesterol and also oat extract with BW dosage, 125mg/kg), Experimental 3 group (daily 1% weight of food is cholesterol and also barley extract and oat extract each with BW dosage, 62.5mg/kg). Then, at the end of the experiment, the animals were bled and HDL, total cholesterol, triglycerides were studied. Results: The results show that HDL concentration in all experimental groups had significant decrease compared to the control group. Cholesterol levels in the experimental group received the extract of barley and oats simultaneously, had significant reduction compared to the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: According to above results of this study, it can be stated that barley and oat extract simultaneously cause reduction of blood fats and cholesterol, so simultaneous use of these extracts is recommended. Also, barley extract has more useful effect than oat extract in reduction of blood fats.
