description | If the term communautarisme has by now invaded the French public debate, it has known dramatic semantic transformations since the late 1980s. By that time its usage became pejorative and limited to the French situation where it was not the case before. While the phenomenon of “communautarisme” has been considered as the main enemy of the French Republic since the 1990s, the word itself is only used by those who defend republicanism. During the 1990s it denotes any possible form of claim judged to be particularistic. More than being a mere descriptive designator, it has become a very common form of political accusation. |
