| Summary: | The paper proposes a triadic model for a comprehensive understanding of Urbanism. “Urbanism could be comprehended using three perspectives labelled Visual, Emotional, and Rational.” is the comprehensive proposition the comprehensive model builds upon. By Comprehensive understanding of Urbanism we mean that Urbanism would be abstractly merely reduced into these three perspectives, and then by which, a holistic detailed perception of any urban notions would be investigable. A main task of the paper is to assert the sufficiency of these relativistic perspectives for understanding Urbanism and to prove the contrasting nature between them. By contrasting we mean that having an understanding of one perspective would entail a closer understanding of the others. The exhaustive analysis of urban notions like place and design, using the three perspectives, are used to prove the sufficiency and the contrasting properties. This abstract/detailed structuring of urban knowledge, in contrast with the sole reliance on fragmented concrete low-level propositions, may prove to be indispensable for studying complex subjects, which would be otherwise highly inaccessible for rigor analysis, like urban identity and users’ urban cognitive mapping. Additionally, using the comprehensive model as a standard monolithic tool of analysis would enrich the social comparative studies. Our findings conform to theoretical and philosophical ontological foundations. |
