description João Ubaldo Ribeiro, novelist, chronicler, essayist and journalist, left a rich and varied work in the panorama of Brazilian literature. In Sargento Getúlio [Sergeant Getúlio], published in 1971, features a violent and determined anti-hero with whom the reader is immersed in innovative and revolutionary language. Viva o povo brasileiro [Long live the Brazilian people], published in 1984, covers approximately four centuries of Brazilian history narrated from the Island of Itaparica. The fil rouge that brings together all the texts of João Ubaldo is the irony and “desacralization” (BERND; UTÉZA, 2001, p.11) that the narrator disseminates in the voices of his characters: the desacralizing function is accentuated in the protagonist’s speech in the 1999 novel A casa dos budas ditosos [The House of the Blissful Buddhas], which is a volume in the Plenos Pecados series by Objetiva publishing house.
