description The life of Joanna of Castile, mother of Emperor Charles V, who ended her days imprisoned in the palace of Tordesillas, suffers from polyphony or silence in the sources and, in particular, in the royal chronicles. By understanding all the memorial aspects of the chronicles, it is possible to approach the problem that a controversial figure such as Joanna of Castile can raise in chronicles intended to laud princes and their dynasty. In these circumstances, it is necessary to look how the major phases of her life are related, from her childhood to her spoliation of power, in order to understand why it has been impossible for chroniclers to produce a sensitive portrait of a princess who was only the third child, turned, after her marriage on the other side of Europe, into the heiress to her parents' kingdoms.
