description This article underscores the intellectual and social relevance of reading Esdras Minville (1896-1975) today. His work stimulates political imagination and allows for a better understanding of contemporary Quebec. By methodically contrasting the modernisation of French Canada Minville called for with that of Quebec undergone during the Quiet Revolution, the paper discusses the key ideas underpinning contemporary Quebec as well as those it opposed. Minville viewed French Canada as deeply embedded in western civilization and as imbued with the Catholic conception of the good. From that starting point, between 1920 and 1960, Minville defended social corporatism, economic cooperation, and ruralisation. Viewing instead Quebec as a liberal democracy in need of secularisation the Quiet Revolution in contrast defended social democracy, large private or state-owned corporations, and urbanisation.
