| description | This paper presents the progress and the achieved state of the art regarding the GIS technology penetration on the Internet. An outline is given to the so far development and characteristics of spatial data distribution on the web. Some GIS tools that are used as web servers are also presented with respect to strategies and technological solutions. Further on, the main characteristic, advantages and weaknesses of the conceived approaches for GIS web servers are described. Finally an overview of the feasible trends regarding the application of mobile GIS systems is presented. The application of small and rubberized field computers for support of data gathering and direct maintenance in the field is the promising mobile GIS approach. |
