Description
Summary:This article has as its aim to discuss the insertion of John Lock in the philosophy of scientific realism in what concerns to the debate realism/empiricism. To achieve this goal I’ll present the hypothesis of Maurice Mandelbaum in which, on the topic of to the scientific explanation’s problem, Lock seems to be on the same path as the realists. To discuss this hypothesis I’ll present a characterization of empiricism which is appropriate to the debate realism/empiricism – characterization that I’ll look for in Bas van Fraassen. However, through this analysis, I do not intend to push the reader to the conclusion that Locke isn’t an empiricist, because, even being the conclusion of this article that, about to the problem of the scientific explanation, he is not an empiricist, it doesn’t mean that, in relation to other philosophical concernments, he isn’t as well.
