| Summary: | This article proposes to explore the government of the Portuguese empire in the seventeenth century, by turning our attention from the metropolitan institutions to the local governmental practices, and to take more into account the territorial dimension of the Portuguese domination and the different populations within the empire. The historiographic reflection carried out here is based on an analysis of colonial sources, which raises the problem of the circulation of government experiences, while emphasizing the political dimension of slavery and the significance of conquest in the Portuguese empire. |
