Description
Summary:This article presents a study of approximately 1,000 organological artifacts from different pre- Hispanic cultures from Ecuadorian territory. The study focuses on the flute group, the most interesting group due to its internal variations and regional significance. Different typologies are distinguished through an organological analysis, detecting a series of sub-typologies inherent to this corpus of artifacts, and compelling to very precise subdivisions which reveal the specificity mastered by the studied cultures. Finally, we make a general review of the cultural implications emerging from the study, discovering the importance of Chorrera culture as the organological matrix of central and northern Andes, and analyzing the role of organology beyond its importance at the service of musical or acoustical practices, revealing its connection with symbolic functions which operate at an internal and invisible level.
