Frequency and characteristics of accessory canals of canalis sinuosus using cone beam computed tomography – A retrospective study

Aim: To evaluate the frequency, location, and width of accessory canals (ACs) of canalis sinuosus (CS) using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: A retrospective analysis of 500 scans from our department was conducted. Result: A total of 500 CBCT scans were studied. The presence of additio...

description Aim: To evaluate the frequency, location, and width of accessory canals (ACs) of canalis sinuosus (CS) using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: A retrospective analysis of 500 scans from our department was conducted. Result: A total of 500 CBCT scans were studied. The presence of additional/accessory canals in the CS was confirmed. Out of a total of 500 CBCT scans of maxilla, 23 scans showed the presence of CS. Conclusion: The present study re-affirms the need for CBCT before carrying out invasive procedures, seeking to preserve vital anatomical structures in the anterior maxillary region, as many cases have been reported in the literature with various post-operative complications. However, we could not find a higher frequency of accessory canals of CS having a significant statistical value. Hence, further studies with a large sample size are warranted for identification of occurrence of any such anatomic variations.
