description | Contemporary border barriers are often considered as protection systems in contexts of insecurity. This article aims to highlight their less frequently mentioned socio-economic dimension. Based on the analysis of 60 borders with a border fence, the authors compare the living standards of the "constructing" and "bordering" states in order to highlight the importance of socio-economic discontinuities in the process of building these barriers. This article reviews the method used to measure the differences in living standards between "constructor" and "border" countries. The discontinuities highlighted in the article finally validate the hypothesis that border barriers respond to the initial logic of gated communities in cities, i.e. the separation of the richest from the poorest. Thus, the socio-economic dimension would be inherent to the construction of these artifacts and not accidental. The authors point out that many of these barriers are anti-migration devices that are part of migratory flows whose causes are not directly explained by the economic situation of the constructing country and the neighboring country, but rather by the situation of third countries, which are "migrant-sending countries", sometimes very far from the barriers analyzed. The authors also point to the existence of "hysteresis" (barriers produced by past contexts, as in Korea) which also blurs the vision of contemporary barriers. Nevertheless, this article highlights how border "walls" are also devices by which the richest countries protect themselves from flows from the poorest countries. |
