| Summary: | Most of the place names examined here are located in an isolated area of 278 km2, bounded to the north by the ridges of the Monts-d'Arrée and to the south and west by the valleys of the Aulne and Ellez rivers, and comprising nine communes. This work is based on cadastral maps from the early 19th century and numerous surveys. The past of this area, in the heart of the Monts-d'Arrée, the meeting point of the great dialects of continental Celtic, has not been marked by any major events or important figures. Although it has received little chronicled attention, the region nevertheless has a very rich past, reflected in its language and the 55,000 or so parcel names recorded in the land registers. |
