Summary:The Italian mass emigration to Belgium started in 1946, just after the ratification of the bilateral protocol for the recruitment of manpower in the coalmines (Rome, 1946), and it ended with the tragic event occurred in Bois du Cazier, Marcinelle. The aim of this article is to inspect, in the decade analyzed, the reasons of a difficult formation of worker unions amongst the Italian miners, and the role of the main Belgian trade unions (FGTB and CSC).
