Description
Summary:In this paper, we analyse the Fernando García Mercadal’s drawings, with which he studied Mediterranean architecture during his stay in Rome, in the early twenties of the 20th century 1, comprehending them as a manifesto. The traveller nature of this architect, who acted as a link between the Spanish and European avantgarde, strongly influenced the development of his drawing and the character of his work, to the point of turning them into transmitters of the new ideas. The use of the image of popular architecture as a code, which acts rather by convention than by analogy, allows us to interpret it as a manifesto, and to relate it with his later work.
