description Athletics is considered one of the most accessible sports for the initiation sport of any child, as it is composed of the natural motor skills of the human being. However, the academic literature evidences that this sport is little spread in the school environment, despite the facilities inherent in its teaching. The aim of the study was to identify if the athletics is taught in the Physical Education classes of the state schools of the city of Imbituva. The research sample consisted of ten physical education teachers from the four existing schools in the public school of the mentioned municipality and the instrument used to obtain the data was a questionnaire. The data were categorized using the content analysis technique proposed by Bardin. Results: After analyzing the data, it was verified that most teachers (70%) develop this content in their classes in order to develop in students their basic motor skills. However, he verified that part of the teachers does not develop athletics in an integral way, and the most pointed justifications refer to the lack of interest of the student body and even the teachers themselves. Finally, it is defended that the teacher plays the role of protagonist of the teaching and presents to the students the other contents that integrate the curriculum of the discipline of Physical Education, otherwise it will not be possible to arouse the interest of the students by the said sport modality.
