description | In the spirit of post-modernism, the Freestone is one of the pioneer novel which practically, by its form, and its essayistic course and meta-narrative commentaries contests a numerous totalistic 'great narrations' of our culture: calls into question the images on subjective consciousness, author's originality and authenticity (Borhese's attitude that all had already been told); on the steady aesthetic values, on the separation of aesthetic, economic and political; traditional image on the time and methods etc. (in the same year when the Freestone was published Fucho expands these theses theoretically). This novel highlights the paradoxes of its own: by contesting the authority it promotes the idea on author's geniality at the same time (through madness-lucidity of the hero E. C.), denies the existence of one unique truth by numerous points of view and Asher's conception while, at the same time, assures the truthfulness of the own story. The Freestone practically illustrates a controversial nature of post-modernism since it determines what it wishes to contest and exists within the system it contests: 'Bart's anti-authorising authority', 'Liotard's great narrativisation of our doubt in great narrations' (awareness that each knowledge is necessarily linked with some meta-narration or 'the truth'), 'master's denial of mastery', how the paradoxes of post-modernistic theory was greatly named by Linda Hatchion in the book Poetic of Post-modernism. In the Freestone some paradoxes of post-modernism are present; for example, elitist need for the order and radicalization of form, need for writing despite the consciousness on the insignificance of writing etc. Founded on self-reflection's, parody and irony, contest of realistic conventions, fragmentation, interest for history, doubt - which are common features of modernism and post-modernism - this novel shows there is no a break between them, but the relationship based on the principles of dependency, difference, problematizing. As per its techniques and narrative resources it is completely in the spirit of postmodernism, while its basic idea represents a defence of humanism whose existence is contested. |
