Summary: | This article discusses the possibility of reform that is church-friendly, and to that end engages in a brief historical analysis of relevant historical periods (Gregorian reform, German reformation, Church renewal in 20th century). The decisive thought of Yves Congar is presented as a significant expansion of the corpus of thought on Church reform by his not so well known fellow friars. Their conclusion was that the Church can only be reformed from within the Church, and through the Church. Thus, the idea of reform is not an unwelcome novelty. Instead, both the Church and the tradition of reforming thought might be seen as two aspects of unique mystery, namely of God’s dwelling among his people. |
