Summary: | Non-personal forms of the verb have received, from a historiographical point of view, little attention. However, studies on the verb or on specific authors are emphasizing that ``non-personal forms'' of the verbs are not always well understood neither explained. This article discusses the category ``gerund'' according to two methodological aspects: conceptualisation and the gramatisation process of this topic throughout history. We also study in detail (during the pre-academic period, from 1492 to 1771, and taking into account the socio-cultural and theoretical context) the following issues: morphology of the gerund, semantic-functional aspects, features of characterization, inter and intralinguistic transfers and the analysis of gerund categorisation process in the history of Spanish linguistic thought from 15th to 18th century.
