description |
The main purpose of this exploratory study was to identify the supportive care needs of women with lung cancer who attend an ambulatory regional cancer centre. Lung cancer has more than a physical impact on those who are diagnosed with the disease, yet relatively little has been reported on the supportive care needs beyond those for symptom management.

A total of 34 women diagnosed with lung cancer participated in this exploratory study by completing a self-report questionnaire (Supportive Care Needs Survey). The data provided clear indication that a range of needs exists for this group of women and many needs remain unmet. Lack of energy, pain, and concern about those close to them were the most frequently reported needs. Patients expressed difficulty managing their needs and many experienced emotional distress because of their difficulties. Suggestions for practice and future research are offered to assist cancer nurses in caring for this group of patients.
|
