description This paper analyses an environmental education project conducted by the Federal University of Santa Catarina at an Elementary Public School, in Florianópolis, Brazil. The experiment involved students in the grade four at the Vitor Miguel de Souza School. As an action-research project, students were encouraged to explore their relationship with their micro-environment and macro-environment. In addition, students were encouraged to become active actors in their community. In order to achieve such goals, we carried out class activities that promoted observation, identification, comparison and representation of the interaction of both environments. As a result of this project, students became aware of environmental problems and highly motivated to act to improve their community.
