description Between 1829 and 1839, the American mathematician Nathaniel Bowditch (1773-1838) published four volumes of Mécanique Céleste by the Marquis de Laplace, translated with a commentary. Bowditch translated the work – originally written by French mathematician Pierre Simon de Laplace and released in France between 1799 and 1825 – and included an explanatory commentary. The dissemination and circulation of Bowditch’s work in France eclipsed all other American scholarly publications in the 19th century. The article aims to highlight the role of Bowditch’s text in the context of the mathematical exchanges between France and the United States, focusing on a direction of knowledge transfer that is usually neglected or understudied by historiography – from the United States to France. It discusses the reception of Bowditch’s intellectual work within the community of French scientists and studies how this American author helped to alleviate any possible deficiencies or difficulties in Laplace’s original text. This article also explores the physical transmission of the text and shows how non-scientific intermediaries who participated in the transmission of the work between Boston and Paris were gradually replaced by publishing professionals.
