| Summary: | Method-development, evaluation research and the body of knowledge of social workDuring the last ten years, a revival of the debate concerning the body of knowledge can be observed. During the same period, evidence-based practice caused a lot of resistance inside the social work profession. In this paper, we develop a broad view on evidence-based practice based on the discipline of evaluation research which acknowledges the complexity of the concept of effectiveness. In such a broad view, the first step is to develop and to describe the program theory of social interventions, which consists of the theory of action and the theory of change. We propose two methods to describe social interventions. In addition, we describe three modes to take into account the complexity of social interventions: (1) viable validity, (2) describing the interaction between the social intervention and the social context and (3) a multi-stakeholder approach paying special attention to the “silent voices”.Methodiekontwikkeling, evaluatieonderzoek en de body of knowledge van het sociaal werkDe afgelopen tien jaar leefde het debat over de kennisbasis van het sociaal werk op en zorgde de opkomst van evidence-based practice voor heel wat discussie en polarisering binnen het sociaal werk. In deze bijdrage vertrekken we van een ruime benadering van evidence-based practice die oog heeft voor de complexiteit van het effectiviteitsvraagstuk. We beargumenteren dat het expliciteren en theoretisch onderbouwen van interventies een mogelijkheid biedt om die kennisbasis van het sociaal werk beter in beeld te brengen. Deze interventie- of programmatheorie bestaat uit twee onderdelen: de handelingstheorie en de veranderingstheorie. We stellen twee methoden voor om interventies te expliciteren en theoretisch te onderbouwen. We schuiven daarnaast drie manieren naar voren om voldoende oog te hebben voor de complexiteit van sociale interventies: (1) praktische geldigheid, (2) het expliciteren van de interactie tussen interventie en context en (3) een multi-stakeholderbenadering met bijzondere aandacht voor de “silent voices”.
