Resistance against antibiotics is an emerging health crisis worldwide, mainly due to misuse and overuse of antibiotics. Production of the antibiotics released active antibiotic residues in the environment. Bacteria selecting these active antibiotic residues and the genes present in it and get resistance against antibiotics. The study was conducted to determine the prevalence of multidrug resistant bacterial strains isolated from hospital waste water. By using standard procedures bacterial resistance pattern against different classes of antibiotics and their species level identification were analysed. To determine the bacterial activity against the antimicrobial agents the disc diffusion method was used. The clear zones were measured separately in millimeter around each disc. Five wastewater samples were collected from different drainage regions of the hospitals in Multan. Total 45 bacterial strains were isolated. Out of 45 bacterial strains, 13 strains (29%) were resistant against two or more than two classes of antibiotics. From sample 2 and 3 all the isolated strains (100%) were MDR. Twenty-five bacterial strains (55.5%) belonged to Bacillus species and other were Enterococcus species, Micrococcus species, Staphylococcus species and Streptococcus species. Resistant bacterial strains in hospital wastes demands effectual treatment plants to treat waste before they dispose of into hospital waste lines.
