Summary: | There seems to be a widespread idea that functional linguistics, as practised by André Martinet and his followers, concentrates on the synchronic description of languages and turns its back on disciplines such as sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics. However, the synchronous updating of processes of linguistic change requires researchers to have a very detailed knowledge of the socio-cultural environments in which they are investigating. This article attempts to take stock of the relationship between developments in functional linguistics and work in linguistics. |
