Summary:This article studies the cases of some slaves of Medellin who applied to be declared free by legal means at the end of the colonial period and during the early Republican. The aim of this study was found in the applications and demands for freedom submitted to the council, classified as court documents, evidence of the level of knowledge of the legal context that had the plaintiffs and their way to benefit the spaces, relationships and knowledge that gave them the atmosphere of the village in order use themto their advantage when defending themselves in court.
