Summary: | Sexually transmitted infections (ISTs) dominated by an important public health problem
worldwide, being the quick diagnosis, through precise techniques important to decrease the transmission
and consequences caused by ISTs. There are three main types of infectious vaginitis: bacterial vaginosis,
candidiasis and trichomoniasis, being these the most inflammatory processes affect the genitals
femininos5. The evaluation was carried out by means of a retrospective descriptive study in 1.240
cytological reports collected at Teaching Assistance Unit (UDA) in the municipality of Maceió-AL in the
period from 2008 to 2012. Were included in the study the medical records of users who reported not
having made use of vaginal creams 24 hours before the exam, no use of antibiotics, not be in menstrual
period and not having had sexual intercourse 48 hours before the exam, were excluded from the study
records of users outside the study period. The results, in relation to the presence or absence of
microbiological agents, were distributed by age group. The following intervals were analyzed: 15 to 34
years 35 to 49 years and 50 to 65 years. It was found through the retrospective analysis (133/1240)
presented reports infectious agents. These 62.41% (83/133) were positive for Gardnerella vaginalis,
32.33% (43/133) for Candida sp, and 5.26% (7/133) for Trichomonas vaginalis.
