| Summary: | Our purpose in this work is that of showing the fundamental role played by Gilberto Govi and Giovanni Virginio Shiaparelli in the publication of the Edizione nazionale delle opere di Galileo Galilei conceived by Antonio Favaro and sponsored and financed by the recently founded Italian State. This role is revealed by the letters and documents here published for the first time. Both Govi and Schiaparelli sought to convince Favaro in providing an edition which should not be cumbered by an excess of erudition, and philological notes. They also suggested that parallel to the Edizione nazionale, addressed mainly to scholars and libraries, an economic edition should be published for a wider audience. But this suggestion was never realized.
