description | The national synod of the Reformed Churches of France, assembled in Charenton in the end of 1644, adopted a Form and manner of baptizing adults converted to the Christian faith: pagans, Jews, ‘Mahometans’, and Anabaptists not being already baptized. This paper examines the content of the form, the probable reasons for this decision and its context: what reality does this form reflect? How many of these persons may have been baptized, given the royal legislation which, theoretically, limits the stay of Mahometans and Jews in the kingdom, and that of Protestants in the New World? Baptism of ‘Moors’ has been discussed by the first synods on. Anterior of 1644, local churches had to conceive their own liturgy, with nevertheless this guideline, according to the Scriptures: instruction should be prior to baptism. The adopted form institutes a harmonization of practice. The form’s text « four-in-one » consists in several questions-answers for all, alternated by specific questions concerning each category depending on their original faith. Before being baptized, the convert had to renounce his anterior state and all doctrine different from the Reformed Churches’ one. At this time, we know only a very few baptisms of converts in the Western synodal provinces, our privileged geographic space, and for Paris before 1645. Concerning the period from 1645 until the Revocation, the number is even inferior. The origin of the liturgy seems to be French: a form applying to the same categories is mentioned for the Walloon Church of Rotterdam (United Provinces) by the end of 1661, i.e. later than 1644-1645, while the most ancient printed version known is dated 1673. Further research has to be done on this kind of baptisms, on possible discussions in synods and local churches in the Western provinces and elsewhere in France, as well for French-speaking churches outside the Kingdom. |
