Summary:Among the tropes used in the Passion and the four texts associated with it in 1530, the litotes stands out for the elegance of its many forms and the strength of its signal to the reader to be conscious of meaning. The litotes forces an expression to take a detour. It negates in order to better affirm. It says as little as possible in order to communicate as much as possible. The plasticity of its morphology and syntax avoids the heaviness and monotony of stereotypes. Its modes of enunciation, namely single and double negation, modulate the impact of its irruption into the discourse. Its range of potential applications means its negative loops appear almost everywhere the need arises. Finally, authors seem to prefer some litotes over others. They are seen as trademarks of individual style.
