description Similarities are often evoked between Breton and Arabic, perhaps because of a high frequency of a phoneme /h/ and a combinatorial variant /x/ in Breton, with regard to Arabic /h, ĥ, x/ not to mention /ä, g̈/; then a tonic accent that is often strong in Breton and Arabic dialects, sometimes accompanied by a typical jerky delivery. Since phonetic impression can vary considerably within a single language, attributing chance phonetic similarities to kinship or other links is pure imagination. In what follows, we will look at the ordinal typology of these languages, determine to what extent Breton and Arabic belong together, and review the other similarities between the two languages.
