description Using the some fourteen hundred declarations of non-Whites made at the Admiralty court in Paris during the last fifty years of the Old Regime, the author seeks to analyse the meanings given to the terms which describe colour throughout the eighteenth century. He notes the near monopoly of the term nègre throughout the period and rejects the idea that noir gradually replaced, it as is the case in legislative texts. Each of the two terms can on occasion be synonymous to non-White, or describe a person of pure African (or East-Indian) origin; it can equally be applied to a slave or to a free person. Thus, the Parisian declarations contain multi-meanings and ambiguities similar to those which have been identified in the dictionaries of the period.
