Summary:In this article is offered the translation into Russian of the publication made by the Crimean Tatar scientist and writer O. Akchokrakly (1878–1938), being entitled «“Ay”meselesi» («The matter of “the Crescent”») from No. 114 of the «Millet» newspaper for 1917. The summary of the translated work is set out: the symbol of the crescent at the Türks and Tatars, the meaning of the crescent in Islam, the use of the crescent by the ancient Türks, the symbol of the double-headed eagle. In the comments on the Akchokrakly’s study, the history of arising of the crescent among the symbols of Muslim peoples is highlighted: the pre-Islamic origin of the crescent, its use on religious Muslim objects, the role of the Ottoman State in approving a crescent as an official Islamic symbol, the sacred meaning of Hilal and its image on the Sandjak, a crescent on the standards of the Ottoman Empire and the Crimean Khanate are also revealed.
