Description
Summary:This paper presents the results of research on the territories of popular music in Uruguay during the dictatorship that the country underwent between 1973 and 1985, addressing the immediately preceding period and some developments of that music to the present. Based on the concepts of identity-project and resistance-identity, territory, scene, and recent history, the generated music is analyzed from the dictatorial regime and from the resistance to said regime. Repertoires are compared; similarities and oppositions in the used musical genres are set and literary contents are addressed. The article examines music produced since the dictatorial regime as a result and, at the same time, as a constructor of a militarily structured plan for the country, of a fierce nationalism. The genres that were the sound symbols of the regime are characterized: the role of military marches, the appropriation of musical and choreographic repertoires of traditional roots. Moreover, the role of popular music in the constitution of a community and a resistance-identity is analyzed; territories for that music in the country and in exile are proposed: broadcasted music, music recorded in vinyl and cassettes, live shows, the music present in prisons.
