Description
Summary:The article represents a lecture on the Vanoni Plan, Italy’s central post-war economic development policy, delivered on October 24th, 1957 at the Economic Development Institute in Washington. The origin and nature of the Vanoni Plan, announced in 1954, are first reviewed before the economic developments that followed in the period 1955-1957 are outlined. The aims of the Plan in light of Italy’s participation in the European Common Market are then considered, as are the increases in productivity and expansion of employment. The author then analyses the industrialisation of the Mezzogiorno within the framework of present Italian economic policy. Finally, the organisational rules for public enterprises operating in a market economy are examined. JEL: O14, O21, 025
