description Prevention is an effective possibility to provide information and manage the dissemination of knowledge, assuming that some children come to school without professional assistance and often without adequate analysis of the professor in how to deal with the special need. This study aimed to promote guidelines on Mental Retardation to teachers from regular schools of a city in the interior of So Paulo state in Brazil in addition to verifying the understanding of these professionals on the points raised. Thus, a lecture was delivered, and its effectiveness was verified by doing a survey with six closed questions, which were collected before and after the guidelines. It was concluded that it was possible to increase the reflection and knowledge about Mental Retardation and its prevention forms in the school setting, in addition to allowing the creation of educational strategies to work in the classroom with these students.
