Description
Summary:The sanctuaries of southeast Italy have produced many votives, mainly small items of little intrinsic value. However, a few of these items were inscribed, despite the fact that literacy was an elite dominated skill in pre-Roman Italy. This paper explores the significance of the act of inscribing votive objects, and the implications for our understanding of both the role of writing in ritual, and of the value and significance of the objects that were inscribed.
