Camões and the Civilization of Commerce. This paper compares Os Lusíadas and William J. Mickle’s The Lusiad; Or, the Discovery of India (1776), intending to approach the process of actualization of meaning which led Camões’ poem to be regarded as the “Epic of Commerce.” In the first part, we briefly present some discursive features that both resist and afford this change of meaning. In the second part, we address some properties of Mickle’s book. Finally, we pose a theoretical-historiographic question concerning Camonian studies.
Rezumat. Camões și civilizația comerțului. Acest articol compară Os Lusíadas și The Lusiad; Or, the Discovery of India (1776) de William Mickle, cu scopul de a aborda procesul de actualizare a sensului care a permis înțelegerea poemului camonian ca o „epopee a comerțului”. În prima parte, prezentăm sumar câteva caracteristici discursive care se opun, dar în același timp permit această schimbare de sens. În partea a doua a lucrării, ne aplecăm asupra câtorva trăsături ale cărții lui Mickle. În final, adresăm o întrebare teoretic și istoriografică pentru studiile camoniene.
