Description
Summary:Bourdieu speaks of a two-levelled societal role of the sociologist. Firstly, thanks to its scientific quality, sociological work can make things more supportable by pointing out the fundamental laws of society. Study of social practices presupposes critical awareness of the ways and means of scientific output in that this latter is also a practice subject to power struggle and the making of sense. The epistemological explicitness of self-criticism can limit bias and improve the credibility of independent research. Bourdieu claims that such an awareness of social factors increases the freedom of human agents. Thus, secondly, sociology can combat inequalities resulting from objective structures by motivating the determined desire for change.
