Description
Summary:Systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) can, in many cases, be controlled with solely hygienic-dietetic measures(adequate food intake, practice of physical activities, abstinence from tobacco and alcohol, and weight control), althoughin other cases a concurrent use of drug therapy is required. The purpose of this study was to gain knowledge on thebehavior of hypertensive patients regarding control measures. The subjects investigated were 18 hypertensive patientsliving in the coverage area of a Family Health Unit located in the county of São Gabriel do Oeste, state of Mato Grosso doSul, southwestern Brazil. A form containing open- and closed-ended questions was applied. Compliance with the measuresof control was very low, even by those who had suffered complications of SAH. On the other hand, 83.3% of the informantswere able to maintain their arterial pressure under control. Medication alone, however, is not enough to improve the healthstatus of hypertensive patients.
