| Summary: | The figure of St. James the Apostle must be studied in terms of the different spaces and time he has occupied, as well as from many angles. To reveal St. James through his biography requires diverse and complimentary methodological approaches. This article seeks to investigate St. James’ different identities throughout the world and over a period of more than 2,000 years. An effective iconography and adaptive practices explain the figure’s survival over time. The former occurs as the figure embodies the spirit of different eras; the latter incudes variations, hybridizations, translations, and local appropriations of the figure, which constitute a manifestation of each culture’s strategies and tactics.
