Summary: | This article deals with the problem of studying the elements of Informatics (Computing) in the framework of general education curriculum by university students who do not major in computing. The expediency of this approach is connected with the role that computing plays in all spheres of life and professional activity. The courses of Digital Literacy or Information Literacy traditionally included by many universities in general education curriculum, are recommended to be replaced or supplemented by the course conditionally called “Introduction to Informatics” since the computing became a supra-disciplinary phenomenon in the modern society. The article describes the experience of implementing the overview course on the fundamentals of Informatics. The course contributes to the understanding of the important role of Computer Science and Information Technologies in the modern world, training of information technology skills necessary to continue university education, and formation of ICT-competence and computational thinking.
