description When prison employees describe “behavior” or call a prisoner “behavioral,” they refer to extreme and seemingly irrational acts of aggression against self or others. These “behaviors” inhabit an indistinct zone between the unruly and the mad, and are not under a clear responsibility of neither custodial nor treatment workers. They constitute a site of ongoing and irresolvable trouble within the institutional setting, requiring the expenditure of considerable means (building of specialized facilities, mobilization of staff). But “behavior” also constitutes an institutional resource for the prison, because it relies on a simplified understanding of behaviorism to establish control over individuals. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in prison psychiatric units using behavior management practices, this article aims at showing how "behavior" articulates the problematic relationship between control and agency that pervades the prison complex.
